Is Glycerin (E422) Vegan? Plant and Animal Sources

Glycerin is chemically identical whether it started as soybean oil or beef fat, so the E-number on its own settles nothing. In food, though, the odds are heavily in your favour.

~ Usually vegan Glycerin (E422) is usually vegan, but the name alone does not prove it. The same molecule can be made from vegetable oils, animal fat or petrochemicals. Food-grade glycerin is now almost entirely plant-derived, and since 2023 the EU defines E422 as vegetable-only. Soap and cosmetics are the real question mark.

What glycerin (E422) actually is

Glycerin is glycerol, a small sweet-tasting alcohol formally called propane-1,2,3-triol. It is the backbone every fat and oil is built on: hang three fatty acids off it and you get a triglyceride, which is what olive oil, butter and beef tallow all are. Strip those fatty acids away and glycerol is what remains.

That structure explains its day job. Glycerin grabs water and holds onto it, so it keeps things soft rather than dry and crumbly. It is also roughly 60 to 75% as sweet as table sugar, depending on whose taste panel you read, and it lowers the freezing point of a liquid. Hence its use as a humectant, sweetener and solvent in chewing gum, protein bars, icing, soft candy, dried fruit and low-sugar baked goods. Outside the food aisle it is even more common: toothpaste, soap, moisturisers, softgel capsules and e-liquids.

Where glycerin comes from: three routes, three answers

Glycerin is a single defined molecule, so the finished ingredient is identical whatever it was made from. Only the supply chain separates one batch from another.

The commercial picture changed this century. Most glycerin now arrives as a by-product: split vegetable oils into fatty acids for soaps and surfactants, or convert them into biodiesel, and glycerol falls out either way. That flood of cheap plant-derived glycerol pushed the other routes to the margins. Dow, then the only US maker of synthetic glycerin, shut its Freeport plant in 2006 and named the biodiesel glycerin glut as the reason. Tallow lost ground on price too.

The suppliers themselves say as much. In EFSA's 2022 follow-up review of glycerol (E 422), they reported that the additive is manufactured only from vegetable oils and fats, either directly or from crude glycerol left over from biodiesel production.

What EU and US rules say about the source

For years the E-number really did leave the door open. The original specification in Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012 set purity limits for glycerol without saying what it could be made from. Nothing in that text ruled out an animal source.

That changed in 2023. EFSA recommended tightening the definition to match what industry was already doing, and the Commission agreed. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1329, applying from 20 July 2023, replaced the E422 entry with a definition stating that glycerol is obtained only from vegetable oils and fats, directly or via crude glycerol from biodiesel production, then purified by distillation.

The practical translation matters. On prepacked food sold in the EU, E422, glycerol or glycerin in the ingredient list means an additive required by law to be plant-derived. That is a strong signal, not a vegan certification: it says nothing about the rest of the list, and it does not cover cosmetics or soap.

The United States has no equivalent. Glycerin sits on the FDA's list of substances generally recognised as safe at 21 CFR 182.1320, with no restriction on the raw material. Tallow is not a regulated allergen anywhere either, so unlike soy or egg in lecithin (E322), nothing forces an animal source into print.

In EU food, E422 has to come from vegetable oils and fats. Everywhere else, and in every product that is not food, a bare "glycerin" on the label still proves nothing about the source.

Glycerin, glycerine, glycerol, VG: reading the label

Four names plus an abbreviation, and none is more suspicious than the others. Here is what each lets you conclude.

Glycerides are not glycerin

That last row causes the most confusion. "Glycerides" looks like a plural of glycerin, but it is a separate additive: glycerol with fatty acids attached, sold as E471, mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids. Those fatty acids can legally come from animal fats, and the label rarely says which. Lactic acid plays the same trick in reverse, sounding dairy-derived when it generally is not.

Which products deserve a second look

Food and drink: low risk

Chewing gum, protein bars, icing, fondant, soft candy, dried fruit and slush drinks are the usual homes for glycerin in food. In the EU the specification settles it. Elsewhere the same economics apply, so plant origin remains the norm.

Supplements and capsules: worth checking

Softgels use glycerin to keep the shell flexible, and supplement labels tend to be worded less carefully than food ones. The bigger problem is usually not the glycerin: the shell itself is often gelatin. Check that first.

Soap and cosmetics: the real hotspot

Here is where a vegan should actually pay attention. Food additive rules do not apply, and tallow is still normal in traditional soapmaking. If sodium tallowate appears in the same list, the glycerin beside it is very likely animal-derived too.

Glycerin and E471: one problem solved, one still open

Glycerin is usually filed alongside E471 as "the ambiguous emulsifier problem", and the 2023 rule changes split the two apart. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1428 gave E471 its own specification update that July, restricting the glycerol used to make it to glycerol that meets the E422 spec. Half the molecule is settled. The other half, the fatty acids, can still come from animal fats, and no labelling rule forces that into the open. E422 is resolved in the EU; E471 is not, which is why it stays near the top of our list of E-numbers that are not vegan.

How to settle a doubtful glycerin in under a minute

  1. Look for the word "vegetable". Vegetable glycerin or VG means you are done.
  2. Check where it is sold. Prepacked food in the EU is covered by the E422 specification. A US snack, a supplement or a cosmetic is not.
  3. Look for a vegan logo. The Vegan Trademark or a Certified Vegan mark means someone has already audited the supply chain for you.
  4. Ask the manufacturer. One email settles that brand permanently, and companies field this question often enough to have a stock reply.

Is glycerin safe to eat?

At normal food levels, yes: glycerin is GRAS in the United States, and EFSA raised no safety concern for its use as a food additive at reported levels. One exception is worth knowing. Slush ice drinks use glycerol in unusually large amounts to stop them freezing solid. In May 2026 EFSA set an acute reference dose of 125 mg per kilogram of body weight and concluded that one slush drink would exceed it for every population group it modelled, with children worst affected because they weigh the least. The UK Food Standards Agency now says under-sevens should not drink glycerol slushies at all, and seven to ten year olds no more than one a day. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland went further in 2026 and advised against them for everyone aged ten and under. For advice about your own diet, ask a doctor or registered dietitian.

Is vegetable glycerin vegan?

Yes. Vegetable glycerin (often shortened to VG) is glycerol made from plant oils such as palm, soy, rapeseed or coconut, so nothing animal-derived is involved. The word vegetable is the manufacturer stating the source outright, which is the wording worth looking for.

Is E422 vegan?

In practice, yes. Since 20 July 2023 the EU specification defines E422 as glycerol obtained only from vegetable oils and fats, so the additive in prepacked food sold in the EU is plant-derived by law. Outside the EU there is no equivalent rule, so E422 is very probably plant-based but not guaranteed by the label.

Is the glycerin in soap and cosmetics vegan?

Not always. Food law does not apply to soap or cosmetics, and tallow is still a normal raw material in bar soap. Look for vegetable glycerin in the ingredient list, or a vegan certification logo on the pack. Sodium tallowate in the same list is a clear sign of animal fat.

What is the difference between glycerin, glycerine and glycerol?

Nothing. Glycerol is the chemical name, glycerin is the common American spelling, glycerine is the British spelling, and E422 is the European additive number for the same substance. None of the four tells you which raw material it came from.

Are glycerides the same as glycerin?

No, and confusing them is a common mistake. Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids are the additive E471, made by joining glycerol to fatty acids that can come from vegetable oils or animal fats. E471 is genuinely ambiguous on a label. Plain glycerin is not.
