Jell-O gelatin desserts are not vegan or vegetarian because they contain gelatin. Pudding is a separate question: some ready-made cups contain milk, while a dry mix needs its own ingredient and preparation checks.

Use the exact box or cup, rather than a search result for the Jell-O brand.
- Match the barcode result to the dessert type, country and pack size.
- Scan the ingredient panel and check for gelatin, milk and source-dependent emulsifiers.
- Read preparation instructions separately; adding plant milk does not remove gelatin from a mix.

Which Jell-O are you buying?
A box of gelatin dessert, a pouch of instant pudding and a refrigerated pudding cup may sit near one another in the shop. They are not interchangeable for a vegan check. The first question is the product category; the second is whether you are reading a dry mix or the food as prepared.
The examples below use Kraft Heinz's own US and Canadian listings, checked on November 1, 2026. A similar-looking box in another country needs its own review.

| Product and market | Relevant evidence | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| US strawberry gelatin cup in the Jell-O variety pack | The published recipe includes gelatin. | Not vegan or vegetarian. |
| US chocolate and vanilla pudding cups in that pack | The pudding ingredients include milk protein concentrate. | Not vegan, for a different reason. |
| US Vanilla Instant Pudding & Pie Filling, 5.1 oz | No obvious gelatin or milk ingredient in the dry mix; mono- and diglycerides and flavourings are listed. Directions use milk. | Not a verified vegan claim for the powder or prepared dessert. |
| Canadian Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix, 153 g | A separate formula lists modified vegetable oil and emulsifiers. | Do not substitute a US ingredient list for this box. |

Why gelatin is the decisive ingredient in jelly desserts
Gelatin comes from animal collagen. It is not made vegan by changing the fruit flavour, removing sugar or using a different colour. A gelatin dessert mixed with water is still animal-derived. See our gelatin guide for names to recognise on imported packets.
Also clarify what someone means by “jelly.” In a US conversation it may mean a fruit spread; in the UK it often means a set dessert. The verdict for a gelatin dessert is not a verdict for every jam, jelly sweet or fruit preserve.
Pudding: check the powder and what you add
The absence of gelatin is useful information, but it does not confirm every other ingredient's origin. Mono- and diglycerides, for example, need a supplier-specific answer if the maker has not made a vegan claim. Our E471 guide explains that uncertainty without treating every emulsifier as animal-derived.
Preparation creates a second decision. A dry mix made with dairy milk produces a non-vegan dessert even when the powder contains no milk. Conversely, plant milk cannot remove gelatin already in a powder. Changing the liquid may also change how a mix sets, so follow directions developed for the mix and plant milk you choose.
A better way to choose an alternative
For a set dessert, look for an explicitly vegan product with its own preparation instructions. Pectin and agar may appear in alternatives, but they are not a promise that you can replace gelatin spoon for spoon. For sweets rather than desserts, our jelly bean comparison shows why the coating also matters.
If you contact Kraft Heinz, include the country, barcode and exact flavour. A useful question is: “Does this dry mix contain any animal-derived ingredients or processing aids, including the emulsifiers and flavourings?” Keep the answer tied to that product. A response about pudding does not cover the gelatin range.
Quick questions about Jell-O
Is sugar-free Jell-O vegan?
A sugar-free gelatin dessert still contains gelatin. Sugar content is not the deciding factor; check the specific dessert type and recipe.
Is all Jell-O pudding vegan?
No. The ready-made cups reviewed above contain dairy. A dry mix needs a separate check, including how it is prepared and any unresolved ingredient sources.
