Are Ritz Crackers Vegan? Original vs Cheese Varieties

A buttery description is not an ingredient list. Original crackers and cheese-filled snacks belong in separate rows.

The US Ritz Original formula reviewed here lists no obvious milk or egg ingredient, but that is not a manufacturer vegan certification. US cheese sandwich and Ritz Bits cheese varieties contain dairy and are not vegan.

Match the full product name before relying on an Original-cracker verdict.

  1. Check the country, flavour and whether the product has a filling.
  2. Read ingredients for whey, cheese, buttermilk and caseinate, rather than judging the colour or flavour name.
  3. If you need confirmation beyond the published list, ask the maker about the exact product's flavours and processing.

Free to download; optional Premium. Full ingredient details or explanations may require an upgrade. Features differ on iPhone and Android; Android photo recognition supports printed Latin-script labels. A result is not certification or an allergy-safety guarantee.

What current US product listings show

The Original cracker and a cheese-filled Ritz snack are different products. That sounds obvious until a search result for one is used to answer a question about the other. Start with the full name, then the market.

These examples come from Mondelēz's US Snackworks listings, checked on November 1, 2026. For a UK packet, use its local ingredient list; the evidence here covers the US products in the table.

Does a buttery taste mean the cracker contains butter?

No. A flavour description is not a substitute for the ingredient panel. In the US Original example, the listed fats are vegetable oils. In the cheese-filled examples, the actual dairy ingredients establish the non-vegan answer without needing to infer anything from the taste or colour.

That does not turn a lack of obvious animal ingredients into a supply-chain guarantee. Natural flavour is a broad description; this review has no product-specific manufacturer statement proving its origin or all processing aids. See our natural flavours guide for a proportionate way to handle that uncertainty.

How certain an answer do you need?

There are three different findings: an explicitly animal-derived ingredient, a list with no obvious animal ingredient, and a current product-specific vegan confirmation. Cheese snacks fall in the first group. The reviewed Original listing supports the second, not automatically the third.

If you require supplier confirmation, ask Mondelēz about the barcode, country and pack size you have. Ask whether ingredients, flavourings and processing aids are animal-derived. Sugar processing may be another question for someone whose requirements include it; we have not verified the processing method for this product. An app cannot supply an unpublished answer merely by recognising the barcode.

Build the snack around the exact packet

For a party board, check crackers and toppings separately. A suitable plain cracker can be served with a non-vegan spread; a plant-based spread cannot make a dairy-containing cracker suitable. Keep packaging available if guests need ingredient or allergy information.

For imports, use the packet's local label and maker contact. Do not borrow this US answer for a UK product just because both say “Original.” Our Doritos comparison shows why regional statements can lead to different conclusions, while plain and chocolate digestives illustrate the effect of an added coating.

Quick questions about Ritz

Are Ritz cheese crackers vegan?

The US Cheese Sandwich and Ritz Bits Cheese examples reviewed here contain dairy and are not vegan. Check the exact product rather than relying on a verdict about plain crackers.

Does “may contain milk” mean the same as milk in the recipe?

No. A possible cross-contact warning is different from an intentional milk ingredient. Neither a vegan article nor a scanner result is an allergy-safety assessment.
